Festival of Sleep Day!

*
Today is an awesome holiday - Festival of Sleep Day!   Here are some random facts about sleep from  here

1. The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.
2. It’s impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical supervision. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.
3. Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.
4. Dreams, once thought to occur only during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, also occur (but to a lesser extent) in non-REM sleep phases. It’s possible there may not be a single moment of our sleep when we are actually dreamless.
5. REM dreams are characterised by bizarre plots, but non-REM dreams are repetitive and thought-like, with little imagery – obsessively returning to a suspicion you left your mobile phone somewhere, for example.
6. Certain types of eye movements during REM sleep correspond to specific movements in dreams, suggesting at least part of the dreaming process is analagous to watching a film
7. Elephants sleep standing up during non-REM sleep, but lie down for REM sleep.
8. Some scientists believe we dream to fix experiences in long-term memory, that is, we dream about things worth remembering. Others think we dream about things worth forgetting – to eliminate overlapping memories that would otherwise clog up our brains.
9. Dreams may not serve any purpose at all but be merely a meaningless byproduct of two evolutionary adaptations – sleep and consciousness.
10. Scientists have not been able to explain a 1998 study showing a bright light shone on the backs of human knees can reset the brain’s sleep-wake clock.

I was lucky enough to sleep in until noon (err.. okay, maybe a little bit past noon...) and I had a nice & relaxing day.  I looked up some new recipes online that I want to try, and I found a bunch of inspiration for new crafts.  One of them is going to include a LOT of buttons.   Do any of you guys have suggestions for where to buy a bunch of buttons in bulk?  Any colour/kind will do!  (Or if you've got a bunch of extra buttons kicking around, I'd love to take them off your hands!)  I'm so excited to start making new things & to make more stuff my shop!  I'm thinking about making bows for headbands and hair clips, art for your walls, garlands, all kinds of stuff!  And it will be good for the spring/summer, because knitted goods aren't going to be in season for much longer!  (Bummer, haha but it will be fun to create new things!)  I also got to watch the movie "Babies", haha I kind of loved it.  Have any of you seen it?  I'm also thinking about signing up for Netflix.  We finally have it in Canada (okay, that's kind of old news!  I think we've had it for a few months!!) and I'm excited!  We can watch it on the wii, which is great.

I hope you all got to somehow celebrate Festival of Sleep Day!  If you weren't able to sleep in today, then hopefully you're able to get to bed a little bit earlier to catch a few more zzz's!  Sweet dreams!  Come back tomorrow to help me celebrate Trivia Day!  I'll be asking a ton of questions!
(These are from the summertime when Keith, Squirt & I slept outside.)

  1. Festival of Sleep! I'm bummed that I didn't get to celebrate!

And buttons... I bought some in bulk off of Etsy before. I've got this shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/OhForCute) in my favorites... it always makes my button-loving heart go pitter patter!

  2. This whole project is such an awesome idea and I'm already really enjoying it! Those sleep facts are interesting. I've always found stuff about dreams kinda intriguing, everything about them is just so bizarre.

And that last picture has given me a super urge to sleep outside now! This summer it's just got to be done. Maybe I'll join in with this project at some point! I already inadvertently celebrated this one by sleeping in this morning but I was kinda pissed about it because I missed my alarm... or apparently turned it off while still asleep because I don't even remember it ringing, haha. Anyways, I'll stop rambling now! Looking forward to tomorrow's trivia.

  3. Aww, this is my favorite day. I love all the sleep trivia. I once read this whole "recipe" on how you can control your dreams, it was really interesting but I was never brave enough to try it. Haha.

All your new inspiration for the shop sounds so exciting! Can't wait to see it all (:

  4. Okay, first I LOVE the picture of the couple sleeping in the hammock. I want a hammock so bad!!! :) What a wonderful holiday to celebrate!! :) Also, we just got a free 3 months to netflix from my step sister for Christmas. I'm so excited to try it! I wish we could get it on our Wii but we don't have high speed internet this far out in the country. :( Hope you enjoyed your relaxing day, friend! :)

  10. I am totally about this Festival! Too bad I didn't get to participate! Having a 2 year old definitely hinders my ability to sleep past 9am. haha. i'm lucky, I hear that some 2 year olds don't sleep past 6am...eek! Could you imagine?! Luckily, my 2 year old loves sleep, just like her momma and daddy. haha.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

  12. Fascinating information! Sleep is my enemy. I always have so much to do that getting to sleep is like a chore. But I know it's vital, so I'll change the lack-of-sleep habit.
