A Peek at My Week... 52!

Spent the day in Dundas.
I've been making lots of lattes!  This one was Stormy Night with vanilla almond milk.  YUM.
Juicing!
Brooke, Alex, Meaghan & I had a girls day!
More juicing!
bahaha  I love this photo of Squirty.
I don't think I'll ever get sick of this.  SO GOOD.
This week was filled with heart making & latte drinking.  Kind of the perfect combination.  I went to Dundas on Sunday with my parents & sister, and I found a vase (that is holding some of the hearts) that matches my favourite mug perfectly.  Kind of strange, actually!  Haha.  And I learned that Dundas is the "cactus capital of the universe", haha.  Maybe this summer Keith & I will hit up the cactus festival...  I started doing the Couch to 5K this week, too.  Tracy came over to hang out for a bit, we talked books & tea, of course.  Then on Saturday I spent the day with Brooke, Alex &  Meaghan.  We went out for lunch, did a little book shopping, then came back here & had some hilarious conversations.  Brooke is going to Japan for a month (!!!) very soon, so I can't wait until she gets back so we can hear all about her adventures.

Adventures in Juicing: Part 9!

This just was reallllllllly good!  I think pineapple is one of my favourite things to juice.  For this juice I put in a bunch of kale, some mint (next time I would put more in.  I just didn't have a lot, haha.), some cucumber and a pineapple.  This is one of my favourite juices, I think. I definitely suggest trying it out!  So good.

Here are some health benefits of juicing kale (via livestrong):

Lutein
Kale is a rich source of the carotenoid and phytonutrient lutein, a natural antioxidant that can increase the health of both your eyes by blocking the potential damage that can be done by exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. Lutein may also help improve the health of your skin, states the Lutein Information Bureau.

Vitamin K
Kale is also a substantial source of vitamin K, with 1 cup providing an estimated 1,327 percent of your daily needs of the vitamin. Vitamin K is most associated with providing your blood with the ability to clot in order to help stop the bleeding when your skin is cut or broken.

Vitamin A
Juicing kale can also provide you with a substantial amount of vitamin A, with an estimated 192 percent of your daily value found in a single cup of kale. Vitamin A is essential for vision health, as well as maintaining healthy skin.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is also abundant in kale, which can be accessed through juicing this vegetable. A single cup of kale can provide you with an estimated 89 percent of your daily value of vitamin C.

Calcium
Kale is also a rich source of calcium, which can be beneficial for those who need calcium sources outside of milk-based products. Calcium is essential for strong and healthy bones, and is needed for the contraction of
muscles, the conduction of nerve pulses and several other processes in the body.

Other Vitamins and Minerals
Kale is packed full of other vitamins and minerals outside of those discussed, including manganese, copper, potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, protein, foliate and phosphorus.

A Peek at My Week... 51!

Still loving this quinoa black bean salad!  Yum.
Squirty is still loving her nutcracker!  Thanks Megan!
I made a couple of headbands for Sophie.
We went out to eat for Lauren's birthday!
Sophie wearing her new "bracelets"!  haha.
Wooo!  I'm almost caught up on these!  Haha.  This week was filled with lots of crocheting for my upcoming craft show, and drinking lots of tea!  A perfect combination, if you ask me.   We also went out to celebrate Lauren's birthday.  Sophie was hilarious!  Haha.  I love the fact that she knows my name now.  So sweet to hear her little voice say, "Holly!"  Haha.  Or "Moses".  I think she thinks Keith's name is Moses.  I also have  a video from that night of Keith, Tim, De & Scott singing and making strange noises while holding Sophie.  hahaha, it's pretty hilarious & I would share it with you guys, but for some reason the computer crashes every time I try to upload it.  Bummer.

Adventures in Juicing: Part 8!

One of my goals this year is to get back into juicing!  There was a while last year where I was juicing almost every day, and then I kind of just stopped.  I really want to get back into the habit of juicing regularly, so hopefully by posting about it & sharing recipes with you guys, it will keep me motivated to juice all the time.
I found a recipe called Green Lemonade, so I used that but changed it a little bit.   I juiced a couple of apples, a pear, some kale, a cucumber, some parsley & a lemon.  It was a little sour with the lemon, so next time I would probably throw in an extra pear or apple, or maybe put only half of a lemon in.  It was still pretty tasty!

Here are some health benefits of juicing parsley (via juicing-for-health):
Anemia:  The high chlorophyll content from parsley is an excellent blood purifier and builder.  The vitamin C and iron content makes iron absorption more effective.  Regularly drinking parsley juice helps bring up the hemoglobin count.
Arthritis:  The rich vitamin C from parley helps protect against inflammatory problems like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Cancer:  Its high concentration of anti-oxidants such as monoterpenes, phthalides, polyacetylenes, help neutralize carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) like tobacco  smoke.  Also good remedy for lung infection or asthma.
Free radicals:  Free radicals (cancer-causing compounds) are abundance in deep fried foods.  Ingesting parsley will reduce the free radical damage done to our body cells as the anti-oxidants neutralize the free radicals.
Heart health:  Folate in parsley is a superb nutrient for cardiovascular health. Specifically, it helps protect blood vessels and reduces the risks of heart attack, by converting potentially dangerous homocysteine into harmless molecules.
Immunity booster:  The high vitamin C content (higher than oranges) and the multi immune-enhancing compounds in parsley make it an extraordinary immunity booster.
Vision health:  The high carotenoids (precursor of A vitamin) in parsley makes it a particularly healing food for vision health.  Add a big bunch of parsley as a juice ingredient daily to see the results.
Wound healing: The excellent source of histidine in parsley is the essential amino acid necessary for growth and repair of tissues.  Parsley juice would do well for people healing from a wound or after a surgery.
Caution
Parsley juice is very potent so it is not to be taken by itself, and no more than 2 oz every day.  Take extra caution when taking this juice especially if you have never done detox.  Pregnant women should avoid taking this very potent juice.
Parsley may be high in oxalic acid, so must not be consumed by individuals who have kidney stones.
It's crazy that something usually used for garnishing dishes has so many great benefits!  It's so easy to throw some into a juice & as you can see, totally worth it!  Have you ever juiced parsley?

If you guys want to try out these recipes but don't have a juicer, you can totally blend it up in the blender!   Let me know if you try it!

A Peek at My Week... 50!

Before heading out to the NYE party, I got started on a new book.  & had a glittery bubble bath, thanks to Nat & Lush!  (Also tea, of course.)
New Year's!  Bahahaha I love NYE parties with these people.  We cheers over & over & over again, and sing scream at the top of our lungs.  Okay, that happens at every party with these people, but still..
Went to Chicago!  We stopped in at Helen and Scottie's house (the halfway point to Chicago for us) and spent the night.
Chicago!
The Bean!
TRADER JOE'S WAS RIGHT ACROSS THE ROAD!!  #$%#$%#$% I LOVE TRADER JOE'S!!!
Drank some moonshine that we picked up at Duty Free!  Good, but MAN those cherries are strong!  Haha.
Navy Pier!  Haha I was so shocked Keith took that "myspace" photo of us!
Hahahah so Keith loves the Chicago Bears, and he was finally able to go into a store that sells Bears memorabilia.  So, he was super pumped.  & made sure that I got a Bears shirt.  We were taking cheesy photos of us wearing all the new Bears things, but then he got bored & this happened.
New Year's Eve!  Chicago!  Helen & Scottie!  The last week of 2012/first week of 2013 was a pretty good one!  Rang in the new year with a bunch of great people.  I took a couple short videos of that night on my camera and I'm glad I did, because they are hilarious to watch.  Or listen to.  We always have such an awesome time, haha.

Keith & I went to Chicago for a Christmas gift!  We decided to leave a day earlier and stop in Lansing to stay with my Nana's cousin Helen & Scottie.  Like Keith said the other day, most people probably wouldn't expect us to have such a good time hanging out with an 89 and a 92 year old, and stay up way past midnight talking, but we had such a blast.  I really wish that Helen & Scottie lived closer.  4 hours (and in a different country!) is just too far.  They were here visiting on my Mom's birthday back in September, but I'm not sure the next time that we'll see them.  Helen is one of the first people that I sit down to write a letter to.  (I actually just got one from her yesterday!)  We had so much fun with them, and I'm sure if we didn't have a hotel booked for the next night in Chicago, we would have stayed longer.

ANYWAY, once we did leave Lansing, we went to Chicago!  Keith's first time!  & his first time going to (driving through) Indiana & Illinois!  (Now to go to the rest of the states!  Haha.)  He had been talking about wanting to go on a trip for a while, so in the beginning of December I booked a trip to Chicago as a secret Christmas present.  He's a huge Bears fan, and if things had have worked out better, they would have played in Chicago on the Saturday that we were there.  But because they were done for the season, all the merch was 30% off, ha!   We had a great time & Keith is already planning on us going back sometime in April.  I've got some more photos of our trip, so I'll be posting those some time next weeeeek.

This weekend I'm super pumped for a girls day/night!  It's been too long since we all hung out & I'm super pumped.  (As I just said, ha.)  I'm not 100% sure what we're doing, but I'm sure whatever we end up doing we will have sore cheeks from laughing.  I think Keith & I might go with my cousin Nathan to visit my Bubba at some point, too.  Keith & Nathan didn't get a chance to go to my Bubba's for Christmas, so we're going to go for a visit.  We just have to figure out a time that we're all free.

Ah, this post is getting super long!  I hope you guys all have a great weekend!  Do you have any plans?

A Peek at My Week... 48! & 49!

Christmas morning.
My Nana & Squirt were really into "The Help".
Yes, that is Keith's favourite shirt... haha.
I finished up Damages.
This is the best tea cozy ever.  Seriously.  It keeps the tea hot for at least 2 hours.  AMAZING.  & I love my mug from Mel!
Sweet lil' Sophie!
Fresh gingerbread cookies.
Okay, most of these photos are from Christmas.  But that's okay.  I think  Sara & I took Squirt to Cambridge to get her photo taken with Santa. haha.  That was pretty funny.  We didn't realize we would be in the photo with her...   Bottled some wine for the first time...the wine is really delicious.  Cranberry.  Yum.  No photos of that, though.  I probably would have spilled wine all over my camera.  Also, on the 21st we went to Tim & De's for a little "end of the world" party.  Mostly hung out, drank, ate pizza & watched shows about how the world was about to end.  We made it out okay, though.

Then Christmas!  Christmas was good.  My Nana spent the whole day here, which was nice.  A while ago she borrowed the book "The Help" and the movie was playing on Demand, so she watched that.  I think she really enjoyed it.  (She is very old fashioned, never had a VCR... or a DVD player, ha.  So she doesn't get to watch movies often.)   What else, went to my Bubba's house for Christmas on Boxing Day.  Keith was feeling sick & didn't come, though.  Hung out with Nat & Kris and watched a marathon of Roseanne... haha!  Man, that theme song has been stuck in my head for weeks... seriously.  & now it's back in. AH.  hahah, I apologize if it is now in your head...

I know I kind of got behind on these posts, but I really enjoy doing them.  They're probably one of my favourite posts that I do on my blog.  Getting behind on posting them made me stop picking up my camera so much, but lately I've been trying to make more of an effort to take photos.  I'm also hoping to get back into juicing (today!  I'm starting today.) and hopefully my "Adventures in Juicing" posts will start back up!  Also, I really want to start that couch to 5k program... has anyone done it?  Any tips/advice?  Hmm... I need a pair of running shoes... ha.
